President's piece 25th Aug 2008
MEETING NO 9
2008-2008
25th August 2008
PRESIDENT'S PIECE
Last night's meeting took the form of our informal business forum which falls on the last meeting of every
second month. The format encourages the committee directors to update the club on their activities and
programmes.
Unfortunately the meeting was poorly attended, for various reasons with only a low fifties attendance achieved.
In Rob's absence, a date for the Kingsley Holgate Paul Harris award evening has been set for the 3rd Nov.
The fellowship committee will convene and recommend a format for the evening - the intention would be to
consider a small entrance fee and open the evening up to the Mt Edgecombe residents and to family and
friends. The website is pretty much up to date however some training in this regard still needs to take place
between myself and the various responsible persons for certain of the websites pages.
Richard's feedback on the Club Service's sub committees seems to indicate all is well in this department.
We were informed that the long awaited Hamburger evening will take place at Bev's house on the 15th Sept.
The next Social Club evening will be hosted by Jeanette in about two weeks time. The Barnyard ticket sales
are disappointing with around 100 unsold tickets for the show this Thursday - as a Club we need re-assess
this situation of our Barnyard commitments as a matter of urgency as we are now in the red.
Robbie was not here to update us on the Service Projects but Les brought us up to speed with the progress
on the various Organic Farming opportunities that he been following up - I have a feeling that the rewards for the
efforts being expended are shortly going to be rewarded.
Richard reported back that the Foundation Seminar was well attended by District and requested that Annette's
Presentation on GSE selection should be presented to the Club in the near future.
One of our visitors last evening was Charlotte Raffaillac, who is an ex exchange student from France, who is
getting some work experience with the Organic Farming Group - she was accompanied by her host Diane
Lamble. Charlotte gave us a brief insight to her background and how she ended up here in South Africa.
We have received a letter of thanks from the Clouds of Hope Centre in Underberg where blankets from the
winter warmth campaign were delivered by Val and Trevor.
Next weeks speaker is our very own Derek Van Bergen who will give us an insight into his interesting life - it is
also Margaret's birthday and a little bird told me she is organising a birthday cake for those stay for supper, so
lets all make an effort to share the evening with her.
The thought for the week " We often win an argument but lose a friend"
I look forward to seeing you all soon..
Your in Rotary,
Greg
