Ian and project co ordinator PE George Enslin with President Musa Dumisa drawing the winning ticket
JANUARY 2008
Monday the 7th January our club arraived at the culmination of three months of hard work with the draw for the "Boesman raffle" The object of the raffle was to raise funds for the purchase of police dogs as the SAPS South Coast Dog Unit has been extremely effective over the years in making numerous arrests among them the two men who raped the Norwegian tourists in 2007. The unit had lost two dogs in a short space of time one of them Boesman, a fine dog and with procurement procedures being time consuming and tedious the club decided to raise funds and ensure that there would be money available instantly should a suitable dog became available.
The raffle was kindly and generously sponsored by Natal Wholesale Jewellers and thanks are due to the franchisees John and Sally Swart and the Shelly Centre store manager Kristy who has been involved in the project - co ordinating, communicating and selling tickets.
Also the South Coast Herald for publicity given during the running of the project.
We were fortunate to have Past District Govenor Colleen Pieterse as a surprise visitor and she assisted with the draw. A late arrival swelled the funds when Candida Amm arrived as a representative from the Southbroom Golf Club with a cheque for R780 which the ladies golf section had collected after reading about the project.
The evening was attended by Senior Superintendent William Slabbert head of crime prevention Port Shepstone Police Station, Superintendent van Loggerenberg from Margate, Captain Michelle Pitout acting Station Commander Gamalahke and Inspector Ian Pitout who had been Boesman's handler and partner for six years.
The 1st Prize drawn by Inspector Ian Pitout went to South Coast Local Pieter Taljaard
2nd prize drawn by PDG Colleen went to Londoners Alan and Sandra Robinson who own a holiday flat at La Dauphine in Ramsgate and
3rd Prize Drawn by Senior Superintendent William Slabbert, to Tersia Botha from Springs who bought her ticket at the Rotary Flea Market.
The total amount raised exceeded R26000.00.
Grateful thanks to all who participated and supported the project
