RI President Wilf & Joan graces KZN

|
| RIP couple with DG Richard & Dawn Fisher |
Rotary District 9270 was honoured recently by a visit from the President of Rotary International, Wilfrid Wilkinson, and his charming wife, Joan.
President Wilf and Joan stopped over in Durban en route to Egypt, and attended the District 9270 annual conference at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, to join the over six hundred delegates gathered there for the most significant event of the Rotary year.
Prior to the District’s final banquet, they mingled with the throngs of Rotarians and Rotary Anns gathered in the Convention Centre, and, later, the Rotary International President pinned the Paul Harris Fellow awards on the lapels of the recipients. These awards recognise a contribution to the Rotary Foundation, and, in South Africa, are regarded as the highest tribute that can be awarded to a Rotarian or deserving non-Rotarian.
The RI President and his spouse also visited the hub of the Rotary Winter Warmth initiative, East Coast Radio. There, they were introduced by the staff of East Coast Radio to some of the tricks of the broadcasting trade.
Another highlight of the RI President’s visit was his presiding at the opening of a community centre in Inchanga, a project of the Rotary Club of Inchanga A 1000 Hills. The splendidly equipped centre caters for the needs of the surrounding community with a clinic and a pre-school education facility.
The President’s wife, Joan, was in her element as a former pre-school educator as she danced and sang with the young pupils of the pre-school section. The pupils and guests certainly showed their star qualities, and the enthusiasm of the little ones was a real tribute to the work already undertaken in education at the centre.
The finale of RI President Wilf’s and Joan’s visit took place at St Mary’s Hospital in Mariannhill, where they learned about the history of the hospital and a special new wing made possible via a Rotary Foundation Health, Hunger and Humanity Grant.
Again, the couple was charmed by the younger generation when they visited the children’s surgical ward. There, they made significant contact with some of the patients, who were happy to meet them and participate in a photo shoot with them!
Thank you, RI President Wilf and Joan, for your visit, your caring and your contribution in interacting with the present and future generations of South Africans.
