ABSA-Rotary Connection Ride
Riders at the start of the race
The annual connection ride hosted by ABSA and the Rotary Club of Empangeni starts at ABSA bank in Empangeni and goes along a detailed route ending at the Clock Tower in the City of Cape Town.
The official name of the event is The ABSA - Rotary Connection Ride. ABSA - because they are the major sponsors of the ride and Rotary Connection because we endeavour to connect Rotary clubs along the entire journey by encouraging participation from their members. 4 members of the Dundee club were at the start and rode all the way to Dundee. We are hoping that besides all the monetary advantages gained from the ride there should be a large PR exercise that would benefit Rotary. It is a Ride that allows the participants to laugh and joke along the way and build up a wonderful team spirit as the ride progresses. At the end of each day, in the evening a fellowship function is held with the local Rotary club. A cheque of R10 000.00 is handed over to that club to use on a project that they and the local ABSA branch have identified between them (Rotary Shares). At this function there is always a lot of joviality as there are a few "awards" that are given out. The wooden spoon , Yellow jersey and the bicycle of the day. Besides handing out R140 000.00 to clubs along the way The Empangeni Rotary Club hopes to raise R500 000.00 to be used for its own projects. This money will be multiplied by using RI's Matching Grants and be used primarily to alleviate the suffering caused by HIV AIDS in the area.
