Club of the Year
"In May 08 saw the Azalea Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg scoop the Club of the Year Award which it jointly shared with
its locally twinned club of Durban North and the Rotary Club of Chatsworth. 46 clubs throughout the District (which includes KZN and
part of the Eastern Cape) are eligible to be considered for this award. This year was a tight race which District Governor, Richard Fisher,
eventually narrowed down to three and then decided this year all were so deserving that it would be awarded jointly. This is an award given by the
District for the club that best displays the pillars of an effective rotary club and has been a consistent all round performer throughout the year.
In particular recognition is given to the club's impact on the community (including number of people benefiting) , extent of hands on involvement
of club members, sustainability and creation of independence. Amongst the club's activities this past year that helped them win the award
include - the completion of the building of a classroom at Russell Girls High, two vegetable garden projects - one at Mpolweni High School and
another at the Mayibuye Centre in Edendale ...the latter helping to support a daily feeding scheme at the centre which feeds approx 80 children
daily, and the club's ongoing child abuse support project which provides care bags to the victims of child sexual abuse which are distributed
through local and outlying hospitals. Well done to Azalea Rotary Club - you have done Pietermaritzburg proud!"
