Originally a fishing village, the town received a great boost with the establishment of an industrial chemicals complex at Umbogintwini in 1906, and grew rapidly into both a residential and holiday area. The town was reputedly named by Shaka Zulu who stated on passing through that "Amanzi m'toti (the water is sweet)" The Rotary Club of Amanzimtoti was chartered in 1966. In its forty one years of existence it has undergone many changes. At present, it has thirteen members, compared with its heyday of over twenty five.
